The story of this novel begins with the lovers Nicholas Young and Rachel Chu who are Professors of the Department of Economics. they are in their late twenties or around early thirties they are Chinese Descendants living in New York City and now Rachel is dating Nicholas aka Nick is from Singapore and he is actually from a very rich man.

When Rachel Chu agrees to go to Singapore with her boyfriend, Nick. He envisions a simple house, walks around the island, and spends time with the one who might marry him. Little did she know that Nick's family home was like a palace, that she would be taking private planes more often than cars, and with an Asian man in her arms, Rachel looked as though she was the enemy of all the ladies.

Where is the luxury that Rachel could never have imagined, When she meets Astrid Young, Nick's Cousin Sister and Eleanor Young, Nick's mother, who has very strong opinions about what blessings and arrangements are allowed and not allowed to marry her son.
